About the Title
Now what exactly is “duct tape” and “WD-40″?
Duct tape will be a different thing for each person, but for me it is focused prayer. You might use it as quiet reflection, time alone, time spent talking with a significant person or just pondering what to do next. The purpose is to get beyond yourself so you can see more clearly. Whatever your duct tape is it will have to be used daily to be effective.
On the other hand WD-40 is about listening. I find that listening to others takes the focus off of myself and frees me to be more caring. You need to make yourself completely available to another in terms of time and attention.
I always have a roll of duct tape on hand: the rule is “If it moves and it shouldn’t, use duct tape.” Duct tape has for years served as a great tool, providing temporary relief from an annoying problem until a more permanent solution can be found.
Likewise, I learned to use WD-40 years ago at my hunting camp. The rule is, “If it doesn’t move and it should, use WD-40.” Like its counterpart, WD-40 has helped me solve numerous household problems with a simple push on its spray applicator.
I’m taking the liberty of applying these simple tool concepts to the more human problems of life. When I was so overwhelmed with “my Emily,” it felt as if I was falling apart. Hence, I had a need for duct tape of some sort. Later, I discovered that a year of denial caused many of my close personal relationships to be stuck. Remember? If it’s stuck and it shouldn’t be? You got it! WD-40. I needed to find some way of renewing those relationships.
